Brunch on weekends is now a reality at Howling Wolf Taqueria. Therefore,…

Brunch on weekends is now a reality at Howling Wolf Taqueria. Therefore, it was imperative that #TheBaldOne make a personal appearance in order to explore and inform for you.

On entering he was pleasantly surprised to see #BobbyStillRuns, he of local bartending fame relaxing on a bar stool. He once toiled for The Major and now slings drinks at the Salem Christopher Columbus Club.

This spacious, sun lit, hungry Lupine inspired spot is familiar to most of you. The dining room seats plenty, and the bar offers 15 or so seats.

Nine entrees are offered on the menu including a Churro, Torta, Burrito, Huevos Rancheros, Caritas Benedict, and Steak & Eggs. There is also a Vegan Southwest Tofu Scramble with charred red peppers, poblano chiles, pico, and black beans served with grilled tortillas. Toss in a special drink menu inclusive of a Bloody Maria and and you’ll certainly need a short siesta after the meal.

For our hungry hero it was the Steak & Eggs, with of course, a third egg. Thinly cut grilled sirloin, chimichurri, Mexican style potatoes, and pickled onion make the plate. The thin sirloin was cooked lightly without a single dry bite, and the chimichurri was fresh, very fresh and savory. We didn’t ask for the eggs to be cooked a specific way, so they were served over easy, with a couple of yolks not surviving the process. The potatoes with skin intact, browned beautifully, and mixed with grilled corn were easily, and deliciously the star of the day. Give our guy a gallon bucket of them, a large spoon, and get out of the way.

The Bloody Mary, or Maria is garnished with a lovely, large, bacon wrapped jalapeño.

Weekends at Howling Wolf are for Brunch.

Lunch at Howling Wolf Taqueria. How about a Wing Fiesta Quesadilla. Grilled chicken breast with the Wolf wing sauce, cheese, bacon, and corn salsa are stuffed into a flour tortilla. You can get bleu cheese or jalapeño ranch for dipping. #TheBaldOne opted for the jalapeño ranch, and a side of Queso. He then added a little Tapatío Hot Sauce to both dips for that extra zip, zest, and zing.

Which Wolf did he feed, the good or the bad? You be the judge but only the BaldGuy knows for sure.

There are occasions when #TheBaldOne realizes that he is long, loooong overdue to visit a Salem spot. The reasons are seldom personal or deliberate, it just happens. After all this is a busy city with bustling restaurant scene and a plethora of choices.

Howling Wolf Taqueria has been around long enough that it needs no introduction. The current team of owners has done a great job in keeping The Wolf, the original Salem Wolf relevant and delicious.

A fresh Dos Equis Ambar Especial from the tap began the experience. This is a full bodied lager created in 1897 by German-born Mexican brewer Wilhelm Hasse, and more importantly is the single favorite Mexican beer of #TheBaldOne.

After nibbling on the fresh tortilla chios and excellent house salsa, it was decided to move on to the mixed appetizer called The Howlah. Chicken Taquitos, curly fries (the avocado fries weren’t available), and Mexican Wings come with this plate, but they are ancillary to the primary player on The Howlah. This starter is all about the Bacon Wrapped Jalapeños. These large peppers feature thick, slab style bacon and are stuffed with cream cheese and chorizo. If you like a little heat, these can bring bring it well. Our BaldDude scored the heat on one pepper at a 7.3, with the second pepper scoring at a milder 5.5. Peppers can vary here and there. These are #BaldOneApproved.

Will you feed your Wolf today?

Last week we paid a long overdue visit to Howling Wolf Taqueria.…

Last week we paid a long overdue visit to Howling Wolf Taqueria. It’s been some time since the new ownership took over, and we have been a bit negligent by not checking in sooner. #TheBaldOne met Ross, their man on the scene, and folks, he and his team have put a good plan into action, even as they plan for tomorrow.

Chips & Salsa began the lunch alongside a Dos Equis Beer fresh from the tap. The chips haven’t changed, but the salsa has, the texture is a little thicker and firmer therefore sticking better to the chip.

That was going to be it for a light lunch due to early dinner plans. Alas and alack. Our BaldGuy was taken aback when Ross insisted on buying him lunch. Oh my, our hero has become corrupt.

The Avocado Salad was a pleasant surprise. Avocado has become quite common nowadays and it’s often just a little to soft. That is not the case here. This Avocado was quite fresh as was the romaine lettuce. The portion was generous and plated nicely.

Now to the Mexican Shrimp Cocktail. This is a new item, that was not yet on the menu. It was a suggestion by Matt the bartender. Thank you Matt. This starter is a hit in any league, and would be a star on any menu, anywhere. We are looking forward to bringing the #HashTagHeroes here to feed their collective Good Wolves after the #HalloweenHordes have worn themselves out.

Tequila Herradura has created a limited batch of their Respado for Howling Wolf called Aqua De Los Allison Lobos, or Water of the Wolves. It’s on our list of things to do.

Check out Howling Wolf Taqueria soon.
