This morning #TheBaldOne strode with a purpose over the North Street overpass and into the north fields of Salem for breakfast at Salems Retreat. It was a surprise visit and no angry colonial militia met him at the river.

On arrival he was surprised and pleased to run into #ThePiniGang. This ready to eat and quite pleasant group of local color had just begun their breakfast of Sunny Eggs and Corned Beef Hash, what we believe to be a Peanut Butter & Fluff Waffle, and a nice looking Breakfast Wrap.

For our always wandering fan of a solid breakfast it was a Greek Omelet, dark rye toast, and a side of the house Corned Beef Hash. The omelet, fully stuffed with fresh spinach, tomato, whole Kalamata olives (nice touch), plenty of Feta cheese looked nice and surely hit the late morning appetite well. Props to the kitchen on the home fries, there wasn’t a mushy one on the plate.

Corned Beef Hash oh my. This hash again deserves special mention. The meat and onion are shredded long, with the shreds of onion adding a nice layer of texture. The potatoes are diced into small cubes and also bring a little something into the mix. If corned beef hash is your thing, this is one you need to try.

A variety of hot sauces were offered. #TheBaldOne selected Cholula Green Pepper for the hash, and Cholula Original for the home fries. It’s best to always keep the taste buds engaged on a broad front.

A return to Salem normalcy? Perhaps.

Yes, it’s the 1st of November. The weather isn’t normal, but your favorite downtown spots are open for business. There are a few late rising visitors still roaming about after sleeping in. But today you’ll be able to find a seat at your favorite spot.

Salems Retreat has become a spot for the October revelers. Nicole and the team had a busy month. Reclaim your seat this weekend and try the Club Sandwiches.

The Sushi at Koto Asian Fusion is calling your name. Fireball Maki has your number. Say hello to Annie and Leo.

The Derby Salem was on the edge of ground zero all month. Now they’d like to see you again. Ask Doug what the Chicken Sandwich has to offer.

Three Sandwiches. Three different spots. All three worthy of your time.

The Dirty Dogs at Longboards Restaurant & Bar are not to be missed. Epic. Extra napkins required. A tall, cold PBR recommended.

If marsh grass is what you see, then J.T. Farnhams is the place to be for a Clam Roll. This spot and this sandwich is #BlueEyesApproved.

Oh my goodness. The Chicken Parm Sandwich at Salems Retreat has a Rolling Stones vibe to it. Can we get a witness to how good this sandwich is?

Here’s a hearty Salems Retreat Breakfast in the favorite style of #TheBaldOne. The sunny eggs and hot sauces are what makes his morning world something to look forward to. The house Corned Beef Hash put this plate over the top.

We offer good words for the Picamas Salsa Brava, a Guatemalan product. This sauce has lots of flavor and a moderate, complimentary heat that introduces itself politely but does not dominate the taste buds. As always the Cholula Hot Sauce, which was used to dress the Hash also did it’s job well.

North Salem, or North Fields is fortunate to have this spot on their side of river.

As the end of 2024 nears, a stop at Salems Retreat for Breakfast was on the list of things to do. #SonOfAnExpletive borrowed the Sunny Egg Trifecta from somebody, but added a couple of fluffy, powdered sugar dusted pancakes into the mix. Sausage links, bacon, and home fries completed this late morning feast.

Ring out the old, and bring in the new with a visit here to see Nicole and her team.

Softly Scrambled Eggs with Turkey Sausage at Salems Retreat.

What is a “soft” scramble? This question come up every once in a while. Some call this style a perfect scramble, chief among them the always bold and brash Gordon Ramsey. When prepared properly the eggs are constantly stirred in the pan or on the grill until they begin to set, then stirred a little more and removed from the heat. They are very soft, perhaps delicate, with not a hint of dryness. If they stay on the heat for even a few seconds too long, they lose their softness. A “loose” scramble is different, having been cooked for less time and features a much less set, hence loose consistency, that some folks would see as under cooked.

This was a good Breakfast. The Turkey Sausage, more like a meatloaf really put it over the top.

Yesterday we discovered a surprise on the always creative, alway evolving world of Eggs Benedict at Salems Retreat. #TheBaldOne has been trying to keep the Breakfast sauces to a minimum this year. But temptation is always there, clever, conniving, and probing for weak points in an otherwise ” iron” will.

Eggplant Benny on foccacia toast, house eggplant, with roasted red peppers, arugula, prosciutto, and poached eggs draped in Hollandaise sauce and drizzled with balsamic won the battle of wills easily, and it was well worth it. As you can see it was a substantial meal. The flavors and textures played well together and the waffle fries served nicely for dipping into the perfectly cooked egg yolks.

It was the eggplant breading, thin and crusty enough to flake off just a little that put this morning feast over the top.

In a town dotted with sweet Breakfast spots, it’s important for each of them to do something to make themselves stand out. At Salems Retreat this has been done successfully with a rotating selection of specials to include some creative Benedict choices, and a small but very good selection of hot sauces.

Yesterday #TheBaldOne worked his way through a big plate of their outstanding Pastrami Hash. Yes it was of course dressed with three sunny eggs. What else would you expect? After seeing the sausage links on another guests plate, our hungry hero, weak as water as Mrs. Slocumb would have said, added them to his order. The home fries were supplemented with two versions of Cholula Hot Sauce. Both the regular sauce and the green pepper version added flavor and zest.

A vigorous walk followed this Saturday morning feast.

Al Pastor Taco Benny on the bar at Salems Retreat.

Yesterday was the first successful visit here for #TheBaldOne since very early October. Nicole and her team had a hell of a busy Halloween season.

This hearty Breakfast was greatly enjoyed yesterday. Marinated pork atop two warm tortillas, covered with onions, cilantro, poached eggs, house Hollandaise, and chopped pineapple. This was an epic, satisfying, delicious way to start the day.

The weekend is now but a memory. The #HalloweenHordes will thin out for a few days, and then return in force later in the week.

Salems Retreat started the weekend for # TheBaldOne last Friday morning with this lovely and quite tasty Crabcake Benedict. The house Crabcakes make the grade, the Hollandaise is more buttery then lemony, and the properly poached eggs bring it all together.

Find a good spot. Eat a good meal. Have a good week.
