Chef Ian at Olde Main Street Pub now has Chicken Liver Mousse on the menu. This smooth, delicious little treat has appeared as a special once or twice before working it’s way onto the regular menu.

#TheBaldOne grabbed a seat at the bar last night specifically to try it. He happened to sit next to the lovely #OutOfContext, who just being served the awesome OMSP Half Chicken was more than happy to enjoy the first dip of marvelous A&J King Artisan Bakers Sourdough Bread into the silky Mousse. Her approval was registered visually and verbally.

Seeing that they also have Rothaus by Badische Staatsbrauerei Rothaus AG on tap was an added and greatly appreciated bonus. This Pils from the Black Forest of Germany is suddenly getting around.

This Broccoli, Cheddar & Potato Soup was our cover photo yesterday. Today…

This Broccoli, Cheddar & Potato Soup was our cover photo yesterday. Today we just want to dedicate a few words of praise for the soup, and for All Souls Lounge overall.

Thick, creamy, buttery, and substantial, the soup is a hit in any league. It’s the kind of soup that makes you want another bowl. The sourdough bread from A&J King Artisan Bakers just makes a great soup greater.

All Souls had become a small sweet spot of Detby Street by serving a limited menu of simple, creative, delicious selections of home-style selections. The wonderful cocktail artisans behind the bar are also worthy of praise.

Oh, and be sure to welcome Little Leo to the fold.

This morning #TheBaldOne decided to explore the wonderful world of Vegan Breakfast…

This morning #TheBaldOne decided to explore the wonderful world of Vegan Breakfast Sandwiches at Gulu-Gulu Cafe,

Our Bald and breakfast loving hero is not a Vegan, and has no interest in becoming one. But, in fairness to the many who are he is making an effort to explore that world and share his thoughts with you.

This was a custom sandwich that started with an excellent sourdough bread by A&J King Artisan Bakers. We really like to see one local business partnering with another local business. In between the slices of bread were sliced, grilled tofu, grilled tomato, sauteed purple onion, avocado, and arugula, topped with a coconut based vegan cheddar cheese by Daiya Foods. Yes it was fortified with Cholula Hot Sauce, but it wasn’t needed to add flavor as the flavors did nicely by themselves. #TheBaldOne just enjoys a little zest in his breakfast most days.

This Gulu Sando by Sammy was nicely crafted and hit the proverbial spot well.

Every once in a while something on a specials board will surprise…

Every once in a while something on a specials board will surprise you.

Yesterday at Gulu-Gulu Cafe Chef Lucy and her team featured a Borscht. What exactly is this some may ask. It’s described as an “ancient” soup with Slavic roots. “A sour soup common in Eastern Europe and Northern Asia. In English, the word “borscht” is most often associated with the soup’s variant of Ukrainian origin, made with red beetroots as one of the main ingredients, which give the dish its distinctive red color. The same name, however, is also used for a wide selection of sour-tasting soups without beetroots, such as sorrel-based green borscht, rye-based white borscht, and cabbage borscht.” No matter what it’s origins, it’s a classically great soup.

This Borscht at Gulu hit the mark well. The Grilled Cheese Sandwich on sourdough by A&J King Artisan Bakers with cheddar, onion, tomato, and jalapeños which were suggested by Eden as the order was taken put the whole thing over the top.

Early yesterday night #KeepThemFlying and #TheBaldOne were looking for a lighter meal…

Early yesterday night #KeepThemFlying and #TheBaldOne were looking for a lighter meal paired with a good cocktail. After a short discussion it was decided that a visit to All Souls Lounge was exactly what they needed.

To nobody’s surprise the place was packed on arrival. The bar was full, but there were a couple of two-tops available by the side wall. They claimed one and Eric, the handsome son-of-a-gun, took the drink order quickly. Within three minutes, despite the crowd, two De La Louisane Cocktails were put on the table. This is one of their selections that is rotated on an ever changing, and very interesting retro drink menu, and the favorite All Souls drink of our always intrepid BaldOne. Rye whiskey, sweet vermouth benedictine and absinthe, bitters, and a legitimate Maraschino cherry on a steel skewer constitute this lovely refreshment which has history going back to the historic La Louisiane Restaurant in 1880s New Orleans. We suggest that you try one on your next visit.

A House Hot Dog with chips and a Maitland Mountain Farm pickle was ordered by our #KeepThemFlying. It turned out to be a heartier meal than expected, but it was eaten, finished quickly, and greatly appreciated the entire time.

For #TheBaldOne it was the “Doug Funnie” off of the Specials board, fried pork cutlet with house BBQ sauce, arugula, and pickled red onion, on a nice, perfectly grilled and buttered (maybe a little mayo too) sourdough bread by A&J King Artisan Bakers. The team at A&J King have got it going on boys and girls. Their sourdough is taking over the city. Now onto the sandwich itself. You may have to excuse us as we attempt to wax eloquently without going over the top. The pork cutlet is pan-fried, There wasn’t a single dry bite and the breading was thick enough to add flavor and substance to the bite and chew without being bready or chewy. A slight sweetness with a touch of spicy tang permeated the BBQ sauce. Flavor and texture in the the right amount were contributed by the arugula and especially the pickled red onion. It can be said, without doubt that was the best sandwich our BaldGuy has had at All Souls since they opened. When you consider that he’s yet to have a bad sandwich there, this one stands at the top of the mountain and will be difficult to usurp. We passed this news on to Jen expecting that she would perform cartwheels across the room whooping with joy. But alas, the room was too crowded and cooler heads prevailed.

Oh, before we forget there was also a cup of outstanding, and more than moderately peppery Tomato Soup involved.

Keep in mind that many, of not all menu items to include the hot dogs can also be ordered vegan.

Take some time soon and soothe your soul at All Souls Lounge.
