In search of small snack prior to heading home for the night…

In search of small snack prior to heading home for the night #TheBaldOne ventured into All Souls Lounge. Their sidewalk patio was packed including a group of do-good types from Salem Sound Coastwatch out enjoying a summer night together. We love this group and the work that they do.

A sweet people watching perch in the window was available so a seat was taken.

The Double Barrel 1895 Cocktail was selected as a slow sipping partner for the whatever snack would be chosen to pair with it. Rye Whiskey, sweet vermouth, dry vermouth, and Angostura orange bitters create this classic cocktail that is finished with real Maraschino cherry, not one of those neon red abominations.

The snack? Hawaiian Sliders made with grilled Spam, Provolone, and guava jelly on sweet Hawaiian rolls. These tasty little treats paired well with the 1895 cocktail. If you’ve ever been to Hawaii you know how big Spam is there. This was a great snack but you haven’t truly experienced SPAM until you’ve enjoyed a fried Spam Wonton.

Here’s a few shots from a Sunday afternoon at All Souls Lounge. It was $5 Mimosa Day and #FilmFestBoss invited #TheBaldOne to share a spot at the bar for sip and a nosh.

A Mimosa or two was enjoyed as was one excellent Bloody Mary. Sydney was on the bar, and our BaldGuy is thankful that they didn’t ask him to leave and drag him out the door by his ear.

The Crab Rangoon Dip is thick with cheese, and bits of actual crab, with a nice peppery undertone. You could say that this is a decadent treat. A bowl of truly good Tomato Soup is also worth your time.

What’s special about All Souls Lounge? It’s small, very often busy, with a small but select menu and regular specials. On the surface it seems like a lot of other places out there. But beneath the surface lies a welcoming atmosphere combined with a chill, relaxed vibe. Some places try a little too hard to provide a place where you can feel truly at ease and never succeed. All Souls has done so whether it be by design or by happenstance.

This simple Tuna Melt with provolone and fresh tomato was admired by #TheBaldOne as soon as he saw it, and admired even more as each bite was taken and savored.

The cocktail is a Whiskey Smash made with rye, lemon verbena tea, and and a hint of lovely mint.

All Souls Lounge hosted the firm of #RyanAndFord the other day and the consultation went well.

Corn Salsa Queso, BBQ Ribs with jalapeño slaw, and a sweet Salt Grilled Cheese demonstrated clearly that the kitchen was on their game. This spot keeps it simple and delicious.

There was a Manhattan in the mix too. “Probably the best Manhattan ever” is a direct quote.

Lunch at All Souls Lounge is always an interesting experience. The menu features upscale grilled cheese sandwiches and hot dogs, a few eclectic starters to include St. Louis style ribs, and a very nice tomato soup. Vegan options are there too, to include the cheese and the dogs.

It was the Specials board that caught the eye of #TheBaldOne early Monday afternoon as he was sipping on a fine lager by Exhibit ‘A’ Brewing Company.

There were a few tables filled on the streetside patio when he walked up. Inside the bar had a couple of seats filled, along with a table or two. This was good as it allowed our HungryHero to occupy his favored counter seat in the front window. If people watching is your thing, the window is your spot.

A gluten-free cup of Butternut Squash Bisque, creamy, with a subtle touch of butter, herbs and some scallion was a good beginning. It was spooned out quickly in spite of an effort to casually and slowly enjoy each scoop.

Chipotle BBQ Ribs with a house Potatoe Salad served as the main. Ribs can be a personal thing for many, thoughts, opinions, and biases in this regard are many. For our BaldGuy, he likes variety in all things food related, and ribs are no exception. These beef Ribs were true fall of the bone style, with a good amount of meat. They were easy to chew, nicely fatted, with a tasty sauce that featured a hint of sweetness balanced with the sharpness of a nice BBQ tang.

What about the Potato Salad? This side was a bit of a surprise. The big pieces of russet were mixed in a fascinating and tasty dressing that initially flummoxed our Hero. He had to ask the question, so he did ask. What is in the dressing? His initial thought was that it was a mixture of mayo and Miracle Whip. That guess was wrong. It was half-sour cream. It worked well, and will be kept in mind the next time potato salad is made at home.

Oh yes. Before we forget.

#TheBaldOne did stop into All Souls Lounge for lunch the other day. The patio was set up for business, but the favored seat is at the high top bar in the window where you can people watch both inside and outside at the same time. The timing was good as a very colorful character was sitting at the bar, a few folks were in the patio, and plenty of local and visitors alike were passing by.

A very good Kölsch by Exhibit ‘A’ Brewing Company out of Framingham was selected from the draught list. Marinated Olives served in a citrus marinade with garlic, red pepper flake, and cilantro was a companion snack. Kölsch is a German beer style that originated in Cologne. It wasn’t served in a traditional stang, but was still a light, refreshing beer. The Olives with a nice touch of the salty, citrus citrus and pepper paired well with the beer.

Salsa made with corn niblets, red and green pepper, and onions were on the specials menu and brought a nicel subtle heat with each bite.

Grilled Cheese Sandwiches, a house strength come in a nice variety of choices. The ODE To Lowe with provolone, crab meat, cream cheese, sweet chili sauce, and fried wonton was the initial ask, but alas, and alack it was sold out.

So. It was onto the Tuna Melt on marble rye. Provolone, gouda, and a house tuna salad filled the bread nicely. The tuna salad, with celery, has a good amount of mayo, but doesn’t go overboard. The bread was grilled perfectly and there wasn’t a dry bite anywhere in the experience.

This spot is one of the more gluten-free and vegan friendly spots in town.

Feed your body, and check out their new music schedule to feed your mind and soul.

There are few jobs in this country that create as many long-term friendships and even love affairs as the restaurant and hospitality industry. Working on close quarters in high pressure situations, and often living together in cramped apartments, your servers and cooks get to each other. The immediate family at All Souls Lounge, and all of their restaurant brothers, sisters, and cousins are asking us to support Gini in loving memory of Brian.
