It was last Tuesday night that Bernadette, a French inspired, farm to table spot that uses local, seasonal ingredients was visited by #TerribleTee and #TheBaldOne. This was a first visit for both of our bold and hungry heroes.

The space is open, to include the kitchen, very inviting, and lit for mood and comfort. Reservations are suggested strongly for a table, but the bar seating is always available for walk-ins. Our duo walked right in and occupied two seats at the bar. Our BaldGuy was somewhat surprised to be greeted warmly on entering. It seems that his unassuming mug is slowly becoming known around town. Who knew?

The menu was provided and paired with a well crafted Manhattan and a fragrant, blonde ale by Saison DuPont, fresh made bread and a really nice butter.

Without any pomp or circumstance a small plate of Barbajuan appeared, compliments of the house. Swiss chard, ricotta, and marjoram work together splendidly to create a lovely, delicious hors d’oeuvre. This small bite, which originated in Castellar, southeastern France was a great introduction to the Bernadette style in both substance and presentation.

Pate en Croute, with pommery mustard and cornichon was ordered first. Best described as a small meat pie baked in a golden pastry crust, it’s a savory and smooth little treat that titillates the tongue and stimulates the appetite. This will be tried again soon.

There were two specials offered and both were ordered. Bay Scallops, small and sweet, soft and buttery were just simply amazing. They were a nice change of shellfish pace. Ask if they’re available when you next visit. The Burger, an outstanding house-baked Brioche was the other special. In a town full of good burgers, this one stands out for freshness. It is portioned generously, as it should be, prepared as asked, and accompanied by nicely seasoned, house-cut Pomme Frites, or French Fries for those of you who don’t Parlez-vous. A nice garlic aioli helped to put a little zest into the experience.

David and Lex provided wonderful, attentive service throughout the visit.

Bernadette attend votre visite.

Where did #WeddingPlanner enjoy her Birthday dinner the other day? Bernadette of course. This new French inspired spot has become a favorite of hers, and it seems that her handsome and debonair #ArmCandy loves this restaurant too.

Two starters, Mussels and a pate began the experience. The Niman Ranch Cates de Porc, with Tuscan kale, Haricot Blanc, and porc jus was our Planners entree. For her cosmopolitan companion it was the Bouillbaisse full of scallops, halibut, mussels, endive and fennel.

Bernadette scores highly with with this dynamic dining duo. We look forward to sharing more of their excellent adventures with you soon.

Our always exploring #WeddingPlanner and her #ArmCandy recently visited the new Bernadette on the corner of Washington and Church Streets. Let there be no doubt that they enjoyed their visit greatly. “Amazing and reasonably priced for a high end experience with the same intimate feel as Settler” was the first thing said.

They began with a few shared starters.

Dressed Lucky Lips Oysters with trout roe and blood orange migonette, Local Mushroom Fricassee with Parisian gnocchi and hens egg, and Maine Peekytoe Crab with celery, radish and dill. It was all just as good as they sound with the Mushroom dish being the favorite.

Brandt Beef Cheek Bourguinon with pommel puree and spinach, and Grilled Swordfish on a cauliflower puree were the entrees. The Swordfish was “outstanding” while the Beef Cheek was rated as “best.”

Dessert, Blood Orange Sorbet Bergamot was a perfect ending.

Overall they loved the “casual vibe, and gorgeous but comfortable dining area.” On their list for the next visit is the Bone Marrow starter. Interestingly they found the price point compares very favorably with some of the other “high end” spots in the north shore area.

There’s more good news on Washington Street.

Bernadette located in the first floor corner of the Brix building is also very close to welcoming their first guests. This Parisian inspired Bistro will be the first French restaurant in downtown Salem since a small walk-down spot (Que Vey?)occupied the The Salem Inn – MA on Summer Street.

L’impatience attend Bernadette.
