What is a Mukbang?

“Also known as “muek-bang,” the term originates from two Korean words meaning “eating” (meokneun) and “broadcast” (bangsong). So combined, mukbang describes an “eating broadcast.”

The popularity of mukbang started in South Korea in 2011. Fast forward to modern day, Today, hundreds and thousands of people continue to tune in to watch so-called “broadcast jockeys.” The jockey, or host, binge eats large quantities of food in front of a live stream.”

But. You won’t have to eat all 45 pieces of Korean Double Fried yourself. Sharing them with friends and family is OK. But if you want to Mukbang, feel free.

Bonchon sits on the edge of downtown Salem and has established itself over the last ten or so years as a player in the dine-in, take-out, and delivery game.

It was past time for #TheBaldOne to visit the other night. It’s tough to hit all of the places that Salem offers. Our hungry hero tries, but there just isn’t enough time in the day, or days in the week.

They now have a modified version of the classic Mozzarella Stick called a MoPo Corndog. It’s filled with melted mozzarella, coated with a crispy breading covered in golden potato cubes. It can be brushed in a sauce of choice, or you can get the sauce on the side for dipping. The choice this time was the Cucumber Wasabi. This savory, fried treat needs to be experienced personally.

Yes of course there were Wings. Half of them were the spicy ones, and the other half were the new dry-rubbed Wings. These Korean, double-fried Wings are unique in the area. Spicy Wings are the staple, but if dry-rub is your thing the new wing will bring the zing.

Always. ALWAYS get the pickled radish if you go for the spicy Wings. They are refreshing and bring a perfect amount of cool to settle your taste buds down for the next bite. It’s all about balance.

Kimchi? Yes! #TheBaldOne never denies an offer of Kimchi. It’s one of those simple, savory dishes that tickle the taste buds in just the right way.The flavor profile is a bit complex, and that is what makes it special.

A Dogfish Head 60 minute IPA washed it all down. Our BaldGuy has an affinity for this wacky brewery, sorry Chris.

You may notice that this spot has staff that has been there for a long time. Some maybe approaching 8-10 years. If you ask why, the answer is simple. Peter is a businessman who treats his staffers with respect, affection, and generosity every day. Their group outings to various north shore restaurants are legendary.

Eleven years ago Bonchon opened and we all had our first taste of Korean Double-Fried Chicken Wings. Many were also introduced to Bulgogi, Bull Dak, Tteokbokki, Kimchi, and Kimchi Cole Slaw.
