On Friday night #TheBaldOne decided it was time to make his second ever visit to Boston Burger Company on Washington in Salem. To be honest , his most immediate thought on entering was to remember Giovanni Graziani, along with Paula and the rest of the Cafe Graziani family. Sometimes the past is indeed prologue.
The place was busy, but the bar was wide open, so a seat was taken, and a Zero Gravity Little Wolf Pale Ale requested to sip while considering the menu.
This spot obviously specializes in burgers, with fresh ground sirloin and every possible combination of additions, available so you can stack your Burger as high as you want. #TheBaldOne chose to “build is own,” cooked rare, with cheddar, pepperoni, and a fried egg, with house baked beans on the side. But first he wanted a bowl of Chili, which he recalled fondly from his first visit a few years back.
The Chili, very meaty with fresh ground beef, onion, peppers, and a really good, thinner broth was as good as remembered. Eating a gallon of this on a cold, snowy day is not out of the question. Special mention is also deserved for the Baked Beans. Soft, a good molasses sweetness, and a medium brown color. These beans are the real Boston Baked deal.
The Chili and Burger came out together, despite the request having been made for tbe Chili to be served first. When the Burger was appraised an additional issue became very clear. It had pepperoni and an egg as ordered. But the cheese was Swiss, and it had sautéed mushooms. No worries, confusion sometimes reins, and our hungry hero decided to eat what was delivered, which was an Alpine Burgerwith two additions. The first bite into the Burger revealed that it was cooked medium, not rare. But no matter, the meal moved on. In truth the last few bites were more medium-well. This distracted from the experience quite a bit. But it still should be said that the Burger is nicely thick and fills the potato bun. House Potato Chips, thick and crunchy, were very lightly seasoned. The very good Chili, and excellent Baked Beans balanced it all out.
We’ll be back again because it’s what we do.
