It’s often said that old-school is the best school. This is sometime true, and sometimes not. When it comes to fried seafood, Dube’s Seafood Restaurant on Jefferson Avenue makes a very strong case for the old-school. Dube’s stands for Salem tradition in many ways in their food, service, and decor. Time travel some say, is really a thing. Maybe so, maybe not. But stepping into Dube’s is like stepping back in time. Your parents went there for the fried clams, your grandparents for the onion rings, and maybe, just maybe your great-grandmother enjoyed the chowder or seafood stew. Every community needs places like this, where memories live on, and new memories can be made.
#WingMan and #ElderBerry joined #TheBaldOne for lunch last week. They arrived early just as the doors opened, and stepped into a sunlit, wood paneled room that presents a ship board appearance and sat at one of the window high top tables.
A mini order of house-cut and battered Onion Rings was provided to prime the appetite and bring focus to the task at hand. These occupy the upper-echelon of north shore onion rings, and you would be hard pressed to find any better out there. The mini order is just enough to get your attention, but still save room for the rest of your meal.
For #WingMan it was a fresh Garden Salad, You just can’t keep the man away from his tomatoes, and then the Seafood Stew with haddock, scallops, shrimp, little neck clams and a side rice. #ElderBerry went for the Fried Haddock Sandwich while #TheBaldOne took a hit for the team by daring the Triple Combination, fried clams, shrimp, and scallops served with french fries, cole slaw, and tartar sauce.
We won’t go into a lot of superlatives here, though we certainly could. Dube’s Seafood Restaurant knows how to do what they do. Your french fries will never taste like clams, and the clams will never be darker in color from old oil. They do it right.
The fried seafood at Dube’s is what it should be, and what it’s always been…. exceptional.
