Who loves a good Meatball? The can be all beef, all pork, or a mixture of the two. Some may be veal. And nowadays there are vegan Meatballs out there, and some are quite good.

Here’s a quick photo array of the various Meatballs that are available out there in our local but wide and wonderful world. These ground, rolled, savory orbs grace our sandwiches and dinner plates and for that we are grateful.

Featured are some of our favorites.

Adriatic Restaurant & Bar (twice), Village Tavern Salem, Blue Fez Restaurant, VFW Witch City Post 1524, Brodies Seaport, Tesoro Cucina, chezcasaboston, Steve’s Quality Market-Salem MA (Arancini), Dotty and Ray’s – Salem, MA, Sam & Joe’s Danvers, The Derby Salem, Red’s Sandwich Shop & Red’s Kitchen + Tavern, Olde Main Street Pub, Deli House, Longboards Restaurant & Bar, Engine House, La Gallina, Flying Saucer Pizza Company (meat & vegan), Georgia’s Pizza, G Bar and Kitchen.

Keep in mind that some of these spots do their Meatballs seasonally. Check the menus.

Where’s your favorite Meatball?

F is for food, and for the following Salem dining and drinking spots.

Far From The Tree Cider occupies buildings that were at one time both an old filling station and a Salem produce hub. Fresh made ciders and some truly creative food adventures are there to be experienced.

Great seafood in a big, bright space, with a wonderful view of the Friendship, two wharves, and Salem Harbor. That is what you get at Finz Seafood and Grill. Better yet you can also get some of the Sea Level Oyster Bar & Kitchen favorites.

Flatbread Salem and their wood-fired pies sit on one of Salem’s contemporary restaurant rows on Derby Street.

In Town House Square you’ll find Fountain Place Restaurant, home of the Corned Beef Hash Grilled Cheese Sandwich. Breakfast and lunch every day.

Front Street Coffeehouse offers coffee, teas, juices, sandwiches, soups, and lots of artwork by local artists.

Out of this world pie and more are available at Flying Saucer Pizza Company located in the corner of Lappin Park.

Fantasy Island Restaurant is Salem’s longest standing old-school Chinese restaurant.

Hadouken Meatballs at Flying Saucer Pizza Company. A Hadouken is a fighting term involving throwing energy at your opponent from the Capcom Street Fighter series of fighting games. Apparently it originated with the 1970s anime Space Battleship Yamato. See the last photo for instructions in Hadouken.

Here at Saucer they are Vegan Meatballs. As far a vegan meatballs are concerned, #TheBaldOne rates these as one of the better ones.

Five things to know about Flying Saucer Pizza Company.

1. They make their dough in-house every day.

2. They use the smaller pepperoni that cups when cooked.

3. There are NO NUTS used in their kitchen. We of course are referring to the food items called nuts.

4. They are very friendly to those who are vegans or gluten-free.

5. You can watch sci-fi features on their TVs while enjoying your pie. #TheBaldOne watched the original Godzilla (not the one with Perry Mason) while enjoying his Pie on Friday night.

Friday night was a night of exploration for #TheBaldOne at Flying Saucer Pizza Company. He ordered his favorite small FSPC pie the Mars Attacks, but got with the vegan meatballs by Gardein and cheese by The Laughing Cow. These choices seem to make the pie vegan friendly, and good for those with a lactose intolerance. This sort of post always brings out those who like to argue about what’s what vegan-wise. Stow the arguments and save them for when you order a pie yourself. We do our best to ask questions and that’s that.

The pie itself was good. FSPC has their own style, so if you’re a fan of crispy, black blistered pie without the “flop,” ask them to keep it in the oven a little longer.

On another note, the draughts beer selection here is very interesting, and features a few beers you probably won’t find anywhere else in Salem.

Whoa! Hold the presses!

Tonight #TheBaldOne will order and eat a small vegan pizza at Flying Saucer Pizza Company. The Mars Attacks pie is topped with olive oil, garlic, burrata, and red sauce with meatballs. This one will have the FSPC vegan meatballs and cheese. Will it work for our daring meatball spelunker? Tune in tomorrow. Same bat time. Same bat channel.

A Deciduous Brewing Company Simple Union Kolsch will have the duty of pairing with the pizza.
