This Sliced Salem: A Chef Competition to Benefit “Behind You” event is next Monday, 6 May at The Hotel Salem.

Proceeds will benefit Behind You Salem – Elizabeth Bookholz Memorial Fund. They are one the more under appreciated and unknown charitable organizations in Salem.

This is a great way to support those who cook your restaurant meals, serve those meals, create that delicious cocktail, and then clean up the mess after you’ve gone home to get comfortable on the couch.

The dinner last night at Counter Kitchen & Bar which is located…

The dinner last night at Counter Kitchen & Bar which is located in the lobby of the The Hotel Salem was well worth the effort. This is great space with lots of big windows, natural light and bright colors.

A Hanger Steak was on special. It came with sautéed whole spring onions, mashed potatoes, and a very nice demi-glaze. This was an excellent, very tender, flavorful cut of meat. It is no wonder that the meat cutters often favor it.

Somehow it became known that we were in the house and one of the bigwigs came over to say hello. A discussion of the various menu items ensued and effusive praise was offered on the house-made hummus. Seeing as our dinner ws already served we promised to come back another time to try it.

However, about five minutes later a bowl of Hummus and house-made Naan bread suddenly appeared, “compliments of the Chef.” There are days you know. when it’s just not easy being the #SalemFoodi Capo di Tutti Capi. Seldom do we accept gratuities, but there it was sitting boldly on the counter. We could not resist.

The hummus is very fine and creamy. The flavors of the chick peas, tahini, garlic, lemon, spices, and olive oil blend excellently. There seemed to be a bit more of a lemony hint than some other hummuses. If you are a fan of hummus, you need to check this one out.

It was washed down with very nice Crois, Argentia Malbec.

The Salem restaurant scene continues too percolate. A few have closed, new places have opened, and now we await the arrival of Kokeshi on Lafayette Street, Smokin’ Betty’s BBQ + Bar on Lafayette, and Ledger Restaurant on Washington Street.

There are rumors of two different entities looking at the old Salem Laundry space, of a new Pickering Wharf concept, and of course the rooftop restaurant slated for the developing The Hotel Salem.

There is also a beer/coffee/sandwich shop going into 217 Essex Street, the old Gathering Church space.

The corner space at 135 Lafayette Street remains empty, The Comida Mexican Taqueria on Essex Street is available, and the closing of Cindy’s Planet on the Salem Willows midway has created an empty space.

That is what we hear. How about you? What do you hear?
