WHERE”S YOUR TACO?

Every once in a while it dawns on us that we have not been paying enough attention to something. With the news that Barrio Portsmouth is coming to Salem this spring in the old Kokeshi space it’s time to start paying more attention to tacos.

Here are some tacos in Salem that we’ve enjoyed. Scroll the photos and let us know where is you favorite taco can be found.

Change is a constant in life, and in business. New things come, new places open. Old places close and new spots come in their place. Sometimes newer places don’t make it. The reasons for this can be many, or few.

Barrio Portsmouth, a spot for Tacos, Tequila, and Whiskey is coming to Salem in the old Kokeshi space that sits between lower Lafayette Street and Central Street. They also have a Barrio Haverhill. The space will remain much the same as they plan no major demo work. They are planning on opening some time in May.

We just had a chat with them today, and we wish them the very best here in Salem.

Looks like a road trip to Haverhill is in order very soon.

Our stop to visit our man Gustavo as he served grilled and smoked meats outdoors for Kokeshi was well worth the time and effort. You can check out our live video by scrolling down just a wee bit. He is located in the old Salem Laundry triangle parking lot.

He served #TheBaldOne an outstanding sandwich of smoked pork loin and bacon complimented by a a house BBQ sauce that was a little smoky, a little sweet, with just the right amount of heat.

There was also a truly great cole slaw served on the sandwich that is very worthy of comment. Cut long and mixed with a little carrot and cucumber this slaw has a slight sweetness that pairs well with the judicious use of vinegar. It has a certain New Jersey diner flair to it.

Check out Gustavo and the Kokeshi Grilled & Smoked Meat Pop-Up this weekend.

K is the eleventh letter in the modern English alphabet. It’s origin is Greek but possibly derived from the Egyptian Semitic tribes. It also is the first letter in a few local restaurant names.

Kame Restaurant is the place in Beverly for sushi. The superlatives used by our operatives for this spot are limitless.

Peabody has the good fortune to be home to Karl’s Sausage Kitchen & European Market. Sit down dining and a full market and deli are right there for you.

Ken’s Kicken Chicken! on North Street here in Salem offers chicken pies, Shepherd’s pies, soups, chowders, and more.

Asian style noodles like ramen and pho with a flair await you at Kokeshi. Try the Flash Fried Chicken Wings.

Koto is a great spot for lunch or dinner. The Chicken & Dragon plate is #BaldOneApproved.

Korean cuisine at K Restaurant in Peabody is without equal on the north shore.

King’s Famous Roast Beef & Seafood is home to a great #SalemRoastBeef plus fired seafood and a #SalemLobsterRoll.

The Tuna Panini at Kushco Bistro is one of their many superior sandwiches and you can get a bowl of house made soup too.

Did we miss any any spots that start with K?

What did you to to relax and warm up after the “big” snowstorm? Did you recover your car from the it’s parking emergency spot? Or did you decide to fill your belly first.

#PollysGirl2 may have taken a dogsled. snowshoed, skied, or maybe walked over to Kokeshi for something savory, hot, and delicious.

The Colonel Sanders was selected from the “Noodles & Soups” choice on the menu. Fried Chicken, Tokyo Wavy Noodle, Spicy Pork Broth, Wakame, Thai Basil, and Vermont Butter constitute this dish. She may have found the chicken familiar in 11 different ways.

A bowl of Steamed Edamame with Macha sea salt came around also.

A visit the other day to Kokeshi on the lower end of Lafayette Street resulted in this hot bowl of Vietnamese Noodles. Ground pork, shaved carrot, bean sprouts, scallions, cilantro, and lime in very nice chili broth.

A confession. Lots of pepper and chili oil was added as progression was made into eating the bowl. There are just some times when extra heat is what you need.

#BlueEyes is. as always, out and about and doing what she does.

A visit to Kokeshi meant that this bowl of Cold Sesame Noodles with Shrimp was her sustenance for the afternoon. #BlueEyes is always brutally honest with us when she sends a photo, and in this case her feelings were that this was not a best effort bowl. But she’ll be back for sure because she, and we, don’t judge a place on a single visit.
