What do you eat with your beer of choice?

At Notch Brewing you can explore a few very European options from a variety of sausages on a board or in a sandwich. Jaju Pierogi are on hand every day as is the most excellent #BaldOneApproved Smoked Trout Dip.

Our team says the top beers on tap right now are Tenner, Zwickel, Dunkel, and the truly wonderful Hefe Weisse.

Check the Notch schedule for food truck pop-ups too!

A short respite at Notch Brewing meant a crossword puzzle, and a cold, fresh Ungespundet. A what? Ungespundet is a Franconian Kellerbier. It’s a malty quaff that’s fermented in a way to regulate the natural carbonation. It’s meant to be sipped and savored slowly and goes well with a small nosh.

The nosh was a “Three Sticks” Nuremberg Sandwich. Three Schaller & Weber sausages, basically small bratwurst are served on a good, chewy bun and dressed with spicy mustard. It’s a quick, tasty snack.

It was a pleasure also to meet #EmmyLou, a dedicated follower of this modest little operation.

Yesterday brought #TheBaldOne to Notch Brewing to have a fresh beer and a small nosh with #FedExFixer. A Rauchtanzer which is a cherry smoked Schwarzbier (black beer)was the call for our BaldGuy. This tasty lager was a collaboration with local goth clothing business Die With Your Boots On. A Continental Blockade, the Notch take on a Polish porter also made it’s way to the table. Truth be told, there may have been more than one of each beer delivered before the afternoon was over.

A Notch Sausage Board was also in the mix. This snack can come with one, two, or three sausages from their rotating selection. The cabbage and carrot slaw is a wonderful part of this board, as are the curry ketchup and Düsseldorf mustard.

Starkbierfest – Brighton! will be held on Saturday, 18 March, and then here in Salem in Sunday, 19 March.

#TheBaldOne was pleasantly surprised Saturday evening when he encountered a Pop-Up by The Blue Ox at Notch Brewing. Truth be told he was heading elsewhere at the time, but a Blue Ox Pop-Up could not be denied. He was pulled in by the irresistible pull of the Blue Ox Burger tidal effect.

Watermelon, a small ear of corn, potato salad, and a half-sour pickle spear came with the Burger. This was an excellent summertime spread. The Potato Salad was simply outstanding. Cool, fresh, and guaranteed to satisfy. A small bucket full would have been greatly appreciated. As for the Burger, well the Blue Ox reputation travels well. They didn’t ask for a desired temperature so our BaldMan took what they gave him. Yes it was cooked past medium, but despite this there wasn’t a single dry bite encountered. That well traveled reputation is earned and deserved.

It’s Saturday, the 5th of July, the day after the cookouts, parades, concerts, and fireworks shows. Salem was fortunate to avoid some of the shenanigans seen elsewhere yesterday. Enjoy your coffee this morning and consider these three summer day snacks.

Leberkäse on a pretzel bun at Notch Brewing. This is a classic, simple sandwich popular in Germany, Austria, and Switzerland. #TheBaldOne first encountered this sandwich in a gasthaus in Kitzingen a town located in the Bavarian State of Germany. It’s topped with pickled onions and a nice tangy mustard.

At Adriatic Restaurant & Bar the Grilled Meatballs are in a class of their own. Served on a bed of Tzaziki with toasted pita these little dollops will make you want more.

Egg Rolls Southwestern style served at the bar on the deck at Longboards Restaurant & Bar. The LBs deck features bar seating, tables, and comfortable couches. There’s even a special space for your pup.

Enjoy every minute of this beautiful Saturday

Yesterday #TheBaldOne celebrated for all of the Fathers out there by scarfing down a Chicago-style Dog at Notch Brewing. Yes, yes we know that a true Chicago Dog has all of the savory, colorful accoutrements on top of the dog instead of on the bottom. Regardless this was a tasty treat that was paired with an outstanding Heffeweizen, and a Sunday crossword puzzle.

In early February we at Salem Food Digest will celebrate our 10th Anniversary. If we were to count the three years at Salem, MA Patch it’s actually 13 years.

Here is a quick photo review of a few of the beers that #TheBaldOne has consumed since February of 2014. We begin and end with the spot where he has indulged himself the most, Notch Brewing.

Scroll the photos and plan your next pint at a local spot.

We selected one truck at the Salem Food Truck & Craft Beer…

We selected one truck at the Salem Food Truck & Craft Beer Festival to feature and it was Travelin’ Pizza. #TheBaldOne had an early chat with their chief cook and pizza peel cleaner on Sunday morning about his building the small, wood-fired pizza oven on the truck. The oven is a kit build imported from France.

A Cheese Pie and a Pepperoni Pie were ordered. The pepperoni cups when it cooks. The wait was about 15 minutes and it was off to Notch Brewing with the pies.

At Notch the pies were paired with a full liter mug of their Fest Bier. This master brew is made but once a year for Octoberfest. It’s an extra smooth beer with good body to it, with a hint of fresh pepper from the aromatic hops to please the palate. This once a year Bier is #BaldOneApproved by acclamation.

The Pizza? The traveling team did well. It’s a very good Neoplolitan style pie that was well worth the time and effort. If you see them in your travels give them a shot.
