The #HalloweenHordes are here, and they are not going away for some time yet. Downtown Salem is, and will be busy, very busy for the duration. Driving into, or anywhere near Town House Square should be avoided if possible. Walking, or a bicycle would be best.

Here a thirteen spots outside of the downtown that would love to see you over the next six to eight weeks.

Loring Avenue runs from Lafayette Street all the way to the Swampscott line in Vinnin Square. In a city full of history, this stretch of Salem pavement has it’s own story to tell. Who can forget Dave Wong’s China Sails? For many years Kentucky Fried Chicken stood sentry at the intersection. This was the road to the very well regarded General Glover House just over the town line. Down by Jefferson Avenue was one of the local Lena’s Sub Shops. The late and lamented Salem Diner could (and still can) be found there.

Today we have Omega Pizza Salem still serving locals and SSU students every day. Fantasy Island Restaurant continues a long tradition of Polynesian and Szechuan offerings. The new sentry in the square is Vesuvius Salem with a sister shop Sweet Java serving coffee and ice cream. Rizzo’s Roast Beef & Pizza Salem is still slinging #SalemRoastBeef. There is a Starbucks at SSU, and a Dunkin’ in the square. Periwinkles Food Shoppe should never fly under your radar.

Keep in mind that just over the Swampscott line are Chi Restaurant – Modern Asian Cuisine and Gourmet Garden Swampscott.

It’s not your granddaddy’s Loring Avenue anymore.

As you come into or go out of Salem on Loring Avenue there are options for a meal or two, or three.

Rizzo’s Roast Beef & Pizza Salem offers a great #SalemRoastBeef and other menu items.

Pizza with beer or a glass of wine at Vesuvius Salem would serve you well.

Fantasy Island Restaurant is Salem’s longest standing full service old-school Chinese style restaurant. But they also offer other Asian options like Vietnamese Pork Chops.

The burger at Omega Pizza Salem is a winner as are their pizzas, salads, and pasta dinners.

Periwinkles Food Shoppe is a true treasure for both their dining room options and prepared meals for home eating.

Well, well, well. It seems that #MeatandCigars is a fan of the #SalemRoastBeef. This establishes that his Salem bona fides are indeed the real deal.

This sandwich is from Rizzo’s Roast Beef & Pizza Salem. You’ll find them in Vinnin Square Plaza serving pizza, calzones, burgers, subs, wraps. salads, pasta, and even rice bowls, as well as a great Roast Beef Sandwich.

Loring Avenue leads into and out of points north and west of Salem. The trip one way or the other features four legs on a #SalemFoodi journey.

Leg 1 – Omega Pizza Salem sits at the easternmost point of the journey. The burger is shown in the photo, but everything that they do is worth exploring,

Leg 2 – Next up is Fantasy Island Restaurant. This spot goes way back in local food history. Polynesian, szechuan and other Asian styles are all on the menu.

Leg 3 – Vesuvius Salemis the newest place on Loring. Situated right at the Vinnin Square triangle they offer a fun menu plus beer and wine.

Leg 4 – In the plaza is where you’ll find Rizzo’s Roast Beef & Pizza Salem. The #SalemRoastBeef is a player.

As the spring weather nears we are sharpening our appetite to once again venture onto the wonderful world of #SalemRoastBeef. Here you see five unique presentation of the classic north shore roast beef sandwich. All photos are in order as listed below.

We like all six, but the Kings sandwich seems to be the dominant choice of the #SalemFoodi crowd with the Sammy’s sandwich running close. We will try them all again of course.

Vinnin Square may sit on the outskirts of town, but it has it’s own world of retail and restaurants waiting for you to pull in, park, and enjoy.

Vesuvius Salem there some some great pizza, sandwiches, and pasta along with a good selection of beer and wine.

You can also have a seat Rizzo’s Roast Beef & Pizza Salem. We have yet to establish where they belong in the #SalemRoastBeef orbit.
