“Yesterday is gone, don’t think about the past.”
Life moves forward, memories serve a purpose, but today is here, with tomorrow to follow.
The Babe Salem has the challenging task of following a legend. That’s always a tough task. Just ask that poor magician who followed The Beatles on the Ed Sullivan show in 1964. Last Sunday #TheBaldOne dropped in for Brunch with #AvroCaptain to see what there is to see. This wasn’t the first visit to The Babe for our shy and timid leader, but since they’ve had time to settle into their new digs, it was an important one.
Our hungry hero entered alone and got reacquainted with Vern who was on the stick behind the bar. A Bloody Mary was requested and promptly mixed. Vern thankfully wasn’t shy with the horseradish and the properly tangy refreshment was sipped as the menu was closely examined. The menu offers some Brunch basics, plus a few interesting options.
Freshly made Lemon Ricotta Donuts with cinnamon sugar and berry jam led off the experience. Served warm, these donut holes were light, and delightfully delicious. These sweet little bites are on par with any similar treat in town.
Then it was on to the “Good ol’ Breakfast” consisting of scrambled eggs with cheddar cheese, yes our hairless hero did add a third egg, smoked bacon, crispy French toast, and latkes hash browns. The eggs were nicely cooked a little soft, but still properly set with just enough cheese mixed in for texture and taste. Chewy bacon with a hint of smoke served it’s purpose well. As for the latke hash browns, these were simply… a revelation. Crisp on the outside, soft on the inside, they bring a subtle, old-school Bapcia effect to mind. Our slick domed protagonist would happily eat a bucket of them and then lay down for a long, happy nap.
Now to the “Italian” that fed The Captain who came in a bit late. Salami, prosciutto cotto, “gabagoo,” hot pepperocini, pickles, provolone picante, shaved lettuce, Italian dressing. And a spicy tomato aioli are stacked high and well on a fresh sub roll. If your a fan of a classic Italian sandwich and it’s variations, put this one on your list.
A couple of High Lifes by Miller Brewing Company closed out this visit. Thanks Vern.
