Scotch Eggs, or Scottish Style Eggs?

They are different altogether except that each is a egg based Breakfast dish.

The Scotch Egg seen in the first photo is a boiled egg wrapped in ground sausage, dressed in bread crumbs and baked , or even deep fried. The classic version has the yolks cooked medium, but they can also be cooked hard. Developed long, long ago for traveling, hiking, and military use this protein packed treat could be carried in a bag, or pocket to eat on the go. There are versions of these to be found in cultures around the globe. The Egg in our photo was served at The Ugly Mug Diner.

Scottish Style Eggs. Some will know them Shirred Eggs, Farmhouse Eggs, or Baked Eggs. Baked in a cup (ramekin) with butter or cream and sometimes topped with breadcrumbs and herbs. Additional protein like meat or fish can be added to make it a lunch or dinner portion. Stephys Kitchen in Beverly served the one in our second photo.

What was your Breakfast this morning?

Crabcake Benedict served at The Ugly Mug Diner. This Washington spot draws a steady and loyal crowd for Breakfast and Lunch.

#TheBaldOne took a seat at the counter just to admire the selection of hot sauces. Having more than one or two sauces will always get his attention. The eggs were properly poached, and the crabcakes tasty. Tabasco Green Pepper Sauce was used to dress the home fries.

The Ugly Mug Diner was the spot for Breakfast yesterday. #BaAndYan accompanied #TheBaldOne and they discussed all things in the downtown Salem restaurant world. Our BaldGuy is always willing to let his brain be picked by those with an interest. He doesn’t know it all, but he knows more than that guy who sits on the bench at Lapointe Park every day.

It was a great morning repast. A Sausage Link and Egg Sandwich, three properly Sunny Eggs with bacon, and an order of Scotch Eggs. The Mug is the only spot in Salem that serves Scotch Eggs on a regular basis. They are a must try when you visit.

Yesterday’s Breakfast at The Ugly Mug Diner was timed well. There are times when a long wait for a seat is required. But that was not the case this time. The counter was wide open, and tables were also available.

#TheBaldOne built his own Omelet with house corned-beef hash, sautéed mushrooms and onions, and cheddar cheese. Home fries and a grilled English muffin came along too. It was a good Omelet, stuffed well, and the muffin was toasted nicely.

If home fries are your thing, the Mug makes some good ones, to include a sweet potato version. The same sweet potato option is available for the hash.

We present a special shout out for these Muggers having El Yucateco Hot Sauce Official on hand. This sauce packs a nice heat, along with a good flavor.

Oh my. Yesterday breakfast was at The Ugly Mug Diner for #WingMan and #TheBaldOne.

It was two eggs over medium with house Corned Beef Hash, toasted marble rye, and of course a side of sliced tomato. The legend of the WingedOne makes clear that sliced tomato wards off any dietary mischief.

The Two-Hash Benedict, with the regular house Corned Beef Hash paired with a tasty Chorizo Hash was for #TheBaldOne. His breakfast shenanigans continue. He walk an extra mile or three over the weekend. It is noted that the eggs were poached very nicely.

The Mug is a very popular spot that often has a short wait for seating on weekends. But they are in many ways very friendly to those with dietary restrictions be they vegan or gluten.

What are your weekend plans?

How about a day at Peabody Essex Museum. There’s a lot gong on there. Take a tour of the Yin Yu Tang House and learn how wealth merchant families lived in China during the Qing Dynasty. The “Let None Be Excluded” exhibit shows that “In the nineteenth-century, Salem residents celebrated the city’s early public school system for welcoming and educating all children. Despite the system’s success, the Salem school committee decided in 1834 to establish separate schools for Black children. This sudden decision and its implementation angered Black residents who launched a near-decade long struggle for the educational rights of their children. Their valiant efforts convinced the Salem school committee to abolish racially separate public schools in 1844.”

You’ll need to eat to we have a few suggestions.

Breakfast at The Ugly Mug Diner on Washington Street. This is where local choose to go want a creative, maybe a little “colored outside of the lines” breakfast.

Rockafellas Salem has a great front patio for people watching and serves a great Crab Cake.

Dinner at Village Tavern Salem offers the largest variety of Steaks in the city, to include a Bone-In Ribeye that is just maybe, maybe, the one true love of #TheBaldOne.

The other day #SonOfAnExpletive decided to drop into The Ugly Mug Diner for lunch. As he looked at the menu he saw the Ugly Mug Burger on the menu and realized that he had never had a experienced a Burger at The Mug,

It;s a 4 ounce, hand-rolled patty on a brioche roll. The order was placed with a request for an extra patty, pepper jack cheddar, and a slice of raw onion. Unsweetened Iced Tea was the beverage of choice.

The Mug Burger is “smash” style, but the patty is fairly thick and allowed for the patties to be medium-rare. This Burger is very good, and reminiscent of one cooked on the grill at home. The one flaw was that the slice of onion never found it’s way from the kitchen.

Try this Burger folks.
