Our exploration of house-made Meatloaf in Salem continues. Village Tavern Salem was our latest stop this past Sunday afternoon. It all began with a menu, and a Belgian-style wheat beer from the tap by the always excellent Allagash Brewing Company.
The first thing we noticed when the plate arrived was the thickness of the slices, or should we say slabs. Meatloaf is meant to feed a hearty appetite and this one looked the part. The VT Meatloaf is all beef, accentuated with some veggies blended into the mix. Topped with a “sweet & savory” glaze, beef gravy and crispy onion rings, with small maple roasted potatoes, and a generous serving of Butternut squash this meal hit a lot of high points.
The glaze and gravy feature a BBQ style tang that accentuates the experience. This was unexpected, but it works and works well. Thickness in a slice of meatloaf is always key to good texture, and satisfaction. These slabs served well to provide the full, working persons home-style, Mom made Meatloaf experience. Each bite provided heft, a soft and easy chew, lots of flavor, and anticipation for the next bite.
Props are also extended to the nicely roasted taters, and the smooth, somewhat creamy squash that still featured a few satisfying homey lumps. #TheBaldOne likes lumps in any mashed root vegetable. Crispy, thin onion rings were a nice bonus.
Meatloaf and mashed tubers should always remind you of Mom’s home cooking. VT passed this test easily.
