Yesterday Wolf Next Door Coffee served an early morning nosh to #TheBaldOne.

The doors had barely opened when our always walking hero arrived with his hunger sharp and stomach growling. Much to his surprise there was a table for two already served and pleasantly chatting with each other. Four others were in line, two of them ordering and the other two waiting their turn. At the same time a food delivery was in process with a five foot stack of boxes. The server, who said their name was “A” kept calm throughout and carried on nicely.

A Breakfast Sandwich with egg, cheddar, bacon, and mashed avocado and a medium black coffee soon made it’s way to our guy and he stepped outside to take a seat on the streetside patio to take in more sweet ocean air and warm morning sunshine.

Yesterday #TheBaldOne decided that Breakfast would be at Wolf Next Door Coffee on Derby Street.

This Wolf, created by an actual Wolf, is a quaint space that carries an old-school casual, friendly atmosphere that just seems to encourage guests to speak with each other. Standing mute in line, staring at a space on the wall while ignoring others who are ignoring you just won’t work here. Once you step in you become part of the pack, but without the hierarchy. They prefer that you not howl or yowl, but they do want to hear you.

A really good large, hot, black coffee by Jim’s Organic Coffee started the morning nicely. You pour it yourself, and on this visit half the pour finished one urn, whole the other half started the fresh urn.

The sandwich was egg, cheddar, turkey and house hummus on a nice white sourdough bread by Fantini Bakery. Amply stuffed with added greens and tomato this is a sandwich of early morning distinction.

A seat was taken on the Mercy Tavern patio. It’s nice to see neighboring businesses getting along and working together. Company and conversation were provided by #GetaHat, #MysteryLaptopGuy (what does he do?), and #DoctorCannnotKeepUp.

Wolf Next Door Coffee served a Breakfast Sandwich yesterday to #TheBaldOne. It…

Wolf Next Door Coffee served a Breakfast Sandwich yesterday to #TheBaldOne. It was their Turkey & Swiss Sandwich on an English muffin which comes with baby spinach, tomato, and generous dollop of a very good Dijon mustard. Our adventurous hero decided to add hummus to the mix on a risky whim. Mustard and hummus? One may wonder if he’d lost whatever is left of his mind. The other guests may have heard or even watched as his intellectual marbles rolled across the floor.

Well. Guess what? It worked, deliciously. The kitchen, faced the challenge of stacking this busy sandwich on an English muffin without flinching. No fear is the right thing attitude in a small kitchen. Make what you have work, and move on to next challenge. It was the move of a true sandwich pro to layer the mustard on the bottom, with the hummus on the top providing an outstanding mix of tastes and textures into a beautiful sandwich that still held together well.

WND operates in a small, historically quaint spot in a Derby Street neighborhood that once was home to Salem’s Irish population and known as Little Dublin. In the early 20th Century it became the center of Salem’s Polish community and remained that way into the 1980s. Stop in soon and commune with our immigrant history, and at the same time enjoy a small meal, or cup of coffee in contemporary Salem.

This morning it was a quick breakfast for #TheBaldOne at Wolf Next Door Coffee on Derby Street. This little spot has made its mark on the neighborhood. It’s always nice to be able to get a quick “cuppa Joe” just a few doors down from your home.

It was indeed a “cuppa Joe” this morning, hot, black, and tasty. The coffees was a medium drip-style by Jim’s Organic Coffee. There was also “The” Breakfast Sandwich with egg, applewood smoked bacon, and cheddar cheese on an English muffin. It’s a good sandwich and only took a minute or two to make. If you grab a morning nosh with this Canis Lupus inspired shop, you can sit outside at one of the Mercy Tavern picnic benches. It’s nice that Mercy allows this when they are not open for their lunch and dinner business.

The Wolf has a nice selection of hot sauces if that’s the way you swing. Our BaldDude selected the Ghost And The Darkness which The Pepper Palace tells is “very hot.” Well, it turns out that this claim is a bit overstated, despite it’s use of Ghost pepper, Cayenne, and peri, it is not all that hot, but it does have a nice flavor. We’ll try a more generous dose the next time.
